The Congolese Sports Legacy

  • Football is the nation’s most beloved sport. The Leopards, DRC’s national team, are 2x AFCON champions and the first Sub-Saharan team to qualify for the World Cup (1974).

  • Basketball, wrestling, judo, and boxing also have strong followings.

  • Kinshasa was home to the legendary “Fight of the Century” (Ali vs. Foreman, 1974).

  • Our 2050 strategy will explore how to leverage our natural resources and contribute to the economic development of sport

Notable Icons

Dikembe Mutombo, NBA legend and humanitarian,  proud son of the Congo and a role model for our mission – Rest In Perfect Peace

Challenges in Public Funding

In 2017, only 0.32% of the national budget went to Youth and Sports, and 0.10% to Culture and Arts. This highlights the urgent need for increased investment and integration into sustainable development strategies.
